The Rondel

The Rondel, recognizable as a semi-circular projection of the western wall: the spiral staircase of its turret is still intact but covered with rubble. From the foot of the rondel an underground passage leads to the Thick Tower. Not far from the rondel the Goethe plate in memory of Goethe's stay in Heidelberg as guest of the Boisseree brothers whose collection of old German and Dutch art he came to know (September to October 1814 and 1815). In in 1815 he met Marianne Willemer again ("Westostlicher Diwan"). The lines reproduced on the plate are taken from a poem which the poetess dedicated to the 75 year old Goethe in memory of the days they had spent together in Heidelberg.
