Ludwig Building

The Ludwig Building, situated between the Domestic Offices and the Ottheinrich Building, was erected by Lud wig V as a residential building by making use of older premises. It is likely that part of a building north of the turret was pulled down when the Ottheinrich Building was buiIt. The only ornamentation of the plain building, formerly plastered, is a late-Gothic frammed sandstone plate over the Gothic portal of the staircase with the electoral arms and the date 1524. Its 1ower corner is decorated by one of the robust stone-mason jests. Two monkeys are seen playing a sort of hefty tug-of-war, a popular sport among men in the Middle Ages and one of which it seems the Elector was particularly fond.
