The exterior of the castle with its defences is entirely in keeping with the need for fortifications, a sober form of architecture with little ornamentation. Research shows the differences in the individual periods of construction extending over a period of four centuries, by the technique of the masonry, the modest profiling, the technical details of construction and defence which always had to correspond with the weapons of the period, by numerous stonemason's signs, here and there even by dates. Numerous contemporary illustrations and documents still in existence show us the various states of the buildings. When we enter the castle courtyard the styles of the various building periods can be seen more distinctly. The courtyard reveals the splendour of the far-famed Palatine residence even in its ruins. |
